Q1: Do They Own Their Own Tooling?
This is the single most important question. Many trading companies and small brokers outsource tooling to third parties — meaning your die is owned by someone else, stored somewhere else, and could disappear if your supplier changes.
A real stamping factory designs and builds dies in-house. At Metal Stamp Factory, all progressive dies are engineered and fabricated on-site in Amoy (Xiamen). Your tooling stays in our facility, and you receive full documentation of the die design.
Ask for: photos of the tooling workshop, die drawings, and confirmation of who owns the die after payment.
Q2: Can They Work From Your Drawing or Sample?
A capable stamping manufacturer should be able to develop tooling from your DXF, DWG, STEP file, or even a physical sample. If a factory requires you to supply the die design yourself, that is a red flag.
We accept customer drawings in any standard format and can reverse-engineer from physical samples when drawings are not available. Our engineering team reviews every drawing for DFM (Design for Manufacturability) issues before tooling begins — at no extra charge.
Q3: What Press Tonnage and Equipment Do They Run?
Press tonnage determines what material thickness and part complexity a factory can handle. A factory running only small presses cannot produce structural brackets or thick-gauge components reliably.

Q4: Who Performs Quality Inspection — and How?
Large factories assign QC to junior line workers following a checklist. Small factories — when run correctly — have the owner directly involved in first-article inspection and batch sign-off.

Q5: What Is Their Minimum Order Quantity?
Many large Chinese stamping factories impose MOQs of 10,000 pieces or more to justify their overhead. This is fine for repeat high-volume orders — but forces buyers to over-commit on new part numbers.
Mounting and adjusting a die on the press takes several hours, sometimes half a day or more, so running only a small handful of pieces as a separate production batch isn’t something any stamping factory can do economically — including us. What we can do is include a small batch of first-article samples, usually around 10 pieces, produced during the same die tryout and adjustment session used for first article inspection. That gives you approval samples without paying for a separate production run. For the actual production order, we discuss a realistic MOQ based on your part size and die setup time, rather than quoting a fixed number that applies to every project.
Ask for: clear MOQ policy for both tooling and production, and whether sample runs are available before full commitment.
Q6: Can They Handle the Full Process — Not Just Stamping?
Stamping is rarely the only process a finished part requires. Depending on the application, parts may also need bending, tapping, welding, surface treatment, or assembly. A factory that only stamps forces you to manage multiple suppliers.
